How to Measure for Rounded Entrance Canopies

Step 1

Mark up 7'0" from sidewalk or bottom of door on building. Your city code may require a higher minimum height. If your city does require a greater height than 7'0" off the sidewalk or grade line, then you have to add Step 1 and Step 6 for final height of front of canopy off grade.

Step 2

From the 7’ mark, or as required, measure up the side of the building (from 1 to 2) to where you want the awning to stop at the top and that is your drop. You can go up as high as you would like remembering that you must maintain a flat plain. We can make off sets; call one of our awning specialists for help.

Step 3

Your projection (from 3 to 4) can be any length you would like, however, you must stay 2' 0" back from a public street.

Step 4

Next, measure the width of the canopy (from 4 to 5). It is recommended that your drop (1 to 2) be at least 3” for each foot of width you need.

Step 5

You can add a vertical face (measure from 4 to 5) to any round entrance canopy.

Step 6

If your door or entrance is NOT at the same grade level as the front of your canopy we must have this distance (from 8 to 9) to calculate the fall of the canopy. If you have a pad with steps that a canopy covers, see the “How to measure” section for the Gable Canopy.

True Half Round

A 3 foot wide canopy would have a center height of 18 inches.

Elliptical Shape

A 3 foot wide canopy with a minimum drop of 3 inches would have a center height of 9 inches.

Taking photos of the project site is very helpful for everyone. It gives TCT&A specialists an opportunity to see where you want the awning to go. TCT&A can send you a rendering with the awning on your building to give a representation how an awning will appear when installed.

A cloudy day is best and take the picture at a 30 degree angle with any sun behind you.
